Chapter 1 - THE RED THREAD

Genevieve’s palm cracked across Maya’s face before I could cross the marble foyer.
My daughter’s head snapped sideways. One sandal slid beneath her as she fell, and her small body struck the floor with a sound that stopped my heart.
“How dare you lay your filthy hands on my dress!”
Genevieve stood over her in a silver gown, examining the place where Maya’s fingers had brushed the fabric.
I dropped to my knees.
“Maya. Look at me.”
Her cheek was already reddening. A bright bead of blood appeared where her tooth had cut the inside of her lip.
“Mommy… it hurts.”
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
I looked toward Julian.
My husband stood beside the dining-room archway, one hand around a glass, watching his sister’s closest friend tower over our child.
He did not move.
“Julian.”
His eyes met mine, then shifted toward Genevieve.
“It happened fast.”
“She hit your daughter.”
Genevieve laughed.
“She grabbed me with filthy hands.”
“She is five.”
Across the foyer, Victoria rose from her chair.
“You have allowed that child to behave like an animal.”
She charged toward us with her hand raised.
I saw the pearls at her throat, the fury in her face, and the exact moment Maya realized another adult intended to hurt us.
I caught Victoria’s wrist.
“Don’t.”
She tried to wrench free.
“You do not command me in my own house.”
Her other hand moved toward Maya.
I slapped her.
The blow sent Victoria stumbling sideways. Her heel slipped, and she crashed onto the marble beside the long table.
Silence swallowed the room.
Victor pushed back his chair.
Genevieve stared at me in delighted shock, as if I had finally performed the scene she had been waiting to see.
Victoria held her face.
“How dare you touch me in my own house!”
Julian crossed the foyer.
For one second, I expected him to kneel beside Maya.
Instead he raised his hand toward me.
Maya buried her face against my shoulder.
Julian smiled.
“You are nothing but a parasite in this house.”
The sentence landed with the weight of preparation.
Not anger.
Rehearsal.
Several guests had their phones raised. None had filmed Genevieve striking Maya. Every camera pointed at me now.
I stood slowly, keeping Maya behind my body.
“You knew.”
Julian’s smile tightened.
“Do not embarrass yourself further.”
My fingers found the faded red thread bracelet I had worn for seven years.
I snapped it.
A thin metallic filament inside broke with a quiet click.
Julian’s face changed.
I pulled the encrypted device from the hidden pocket of my purse. Its dark screen awakened beneath my thumb.
Genevieve stopped smiling.
Victoria tried to rise.
Victor whispered, “Take that from her.”
Julian reached toward me.
I stepped back and pressed the side control.
“Harrison.”
Static answered.
Then a man’s voice came through.
“I’m here.”
“Tell my father I am done hiding.”
No one moved.
A red indicator began pulsing across the device.
Julian stared at it as though he had seen it before.
Then Harrison spoke again.
“Eleanor, do not leave through the main gate.”
My skin went cold.
“Why?”
“Someone inside the house activated your emergency channel eleven minutes before you did.”
May you like
Julian lowered his hand.
And for the first time that night, he looked afraid.
