Chapter 7 - PROJECT THREAD

The device remained sealed.
No remote access succeeded.
Its audit log did.
Victor’s server had attempted to authenticate using credentials issued seven years earlier—the same year my family changed my identity protocol.
Victor denied knowledge.
His technology director blamed malware.
A targeted access request did not behave like malware.
The court authorized preservation of Vance systems.
Within hours, servers began deleting archived files under automatic retention schedules activated that morning.
The timing triggered an obstruction inquiry.
Victor called it routine maintenance.
Genevieve disappeared.
Her attorney said she had traveled for work. Her phone stopped transmitting before the preservation order reached her.
I made another mistake.
I agreed to meet Julian privately in a courthouse mediation room.
Lena attended but waited outside at his request because he claimed he would discuss “family safety.”
He looked exhausted.
“I did not know Genevieve would strike that hard.”
“You knew she would strike Maya.”
“I thought she would slap her hand.”
My vision blurred with anger.
“You measured the amount of violence you were willing to accept.”
“I was trying to save thousands of employees.”
“From what?”
“My father made transfers he cannot explain. The lenders found a gap. If the wrong people take control, the company collapses.”
“What does that have to do with my bracelet?”
Julian looked toward the door.
“Your father controls the only block large enough to stop foreclosure.”
The first clear piece.
Not the whole truth.
“Who told you?”
“My father found records after we married.”
“Why didn’t you ask me?”
“Because you would have called Harrison.”
“You built a trap instead.”
“We needed proof you still had authority.”
He slid a document across the table.
Sign a temporary proxy, and I will testify that Genevieve acted alone.
He was trading truth about our daughter for control he still had not explained.
I tore the page in half.
Julian’s face hardened.
“Then Maya will grow up knowing you chose your father’s secrets over her family.”
Lena entered when I raised my voice.
Julian left.
Beneath the torn proxy, he had accidentally left one page from his notes.

The plan had never focused only on me.
They intended to use my five-year-old daughter’s name to control whatever my family had hidden.
