Chapter 7 - EMILY’S INTERVIEW
Emily’s forensic interviewer was named Claire Bennett.
I watched through glass only because the court allowed it and Emily wanted me nearby.
Claire began with school.
Music.
Max.
No leading.
No dramatic language.
Emily said Patricia told her Thursday morning:
“You’re too old to need an animal following you.”
Emily argued.
Max barked when Gerald raised his voice.
Gerald said:
“See? Dangerous.”
Patricia’s niece Ava was there briefly.
Ava backed away when Max approached.
Not lunged.
Approached.
Patricia told Emily:
“He frightens children.”
Emily put Max in her room.
Later Patricia removed him.
Emily heard him in the garage.
At 4:40, Patricia taped the note to her bedroom.
Emily asked:
“Where’s Max?”
Patricia said:
“You’ll find out at dinner.”
Emily tried to call me.
Her phone was missing.
Patricia said:
“You lose privileges when you become hysterical.”
At dinner, she showed the bowl.
Then:
“Max is gone. Stop crying and eat.”
Emily did not eat.
Gerald told her:
“One bite.”
She refused.
Patricia said:
“You need to learn attachment doesn’t control this family.”
That line became important later.
Attachment.
