Chapter 14 - AVA WAS NOT AFRAID

Patricia’s niece Ava was thirteen.

Her mother allowed a child advocate to ask about Max.

“Were you afraid of him?”

Ava shrugged.

“He was big.”

“Did he attack you?”

“No.”

“Growl?”

“No.”

“Jump?”

“He tried to smell my shoes.”

“Did you ask anyone to remove him?”

“No.”

Then:

“Aunt Patricia told me to say he scared me.”

The room changed.

“When?”

“Before Rachel came home.”

“Why?”

“She said Emily needed to learn that people matter more than dogs.”

Ava looked embarrassed.

“I thought she was giving Max away.”

Nobody told Ava what actually happened until later.

She cried for two days.
