Chapter 20 - EMILY ASKS THE HARDEST QUESTION

“Did Grandma kill Max because of me?”
Emily asked in therapy.
Dr. Grant let me answer.
“No.”
“She said he made me spoiled.”
“No.”
“If I didn’t need a service dog—”
“Stop.”
I moved closer.
“Max died because Grandma made a cruel choice.”
“Because of my seizures?”
“No.”
“Because of money?”
I had tried keeping the financial case away from her.
She heard adults.
Children always do.
“Partly because Grandma wanted control over decisions and money connected to your care.”
Emily stared.
“So if I was normal—”
“You are normal.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
I corrected.
“If you didn’t have epilepsy, Grandma would still be responsible for what she chose.”
Emily cried.
“I miss him.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
Max had chewed two pairs of my shoes.
Urinated on my rug.
Barked at delivery drivers.

Woke me at five.
I missed him so much I sometimes thought I heard his tags in the hallway.
