Chapter 25 - SENTENCING
I gave two victim statements.
One for me.
One describing impact on Emily without pretending to speak every emotion for her.
Emily submitted a short written statement through her advocate.
I did not edit it.
It said:
Max was my friend.
He helped me sleep.
Grandma knew I loved him and used that because she wanted me to obey her.
I don’t want her to say she did it because she was helping me.
That was all.
Better than anything I could have written.
Patricia received a substantial custodial sentence across the coordinated state and federal resolutions, followed by supervision, restitution obligations, and a lengthy no-contact order concerning Emily.
Gerald received less incarceration because his direct conduct differed and because of cooperation, but he did not walk away.
Restitution.
Probation/supervision after custody.
No role managing Emily’s benefits or trust.
No unsupervised contact.
I did not celebrate.
Emily asked:
“Are they going to jail?”
“Yes.”
“For Max?”
“For several things they did.”
“Good.”

Then she cried.
Children can want consequences and still grieve grandparents.
