Chapter 18 - THE FULL VIDEO

The recovered dining-room video was forty-six minutes long.
My attorney recommended I not watch all of it.
I did anyway.
Bad decision.
Necessary for me.
Patricia placed the note on the table earlier that afternoon.
Gerald entered.
“What did you do with him?”
Patricia:
“It’s handled.”
“Meaning?”
She answered.
Gerald swore.
“You’re insane.”
Patricia:
“Don’t become moral now.”
Gerald:
“I said get rid of the dog.”
“You said solve the problem.”
“Not that.”
For one second, I felt relief.
Then Gerald sat down.
Stayed.
Helped set the table.
That mattered.
Patricia:
“Rachel will come apart.”
Gerald:
“She’ll call police.”
“No. She’ll scream first.”
“How does that help?”
“The guardianship petition.”
Gerald stared.
“You planned this?”
“I planned consequences.”
Then:
“If Rachel sees what we did to that dog, she’ll lose control. Make sure the camera gets all of it.”
Gerald did not leave.
Did not call me.
Did not remove Emily.
He said:
“What if she just takes her and goes?”
Patricia smiled.
“She never walks away quietly.”

They thought they knew me.
Maybe once they did.
