Chapter 15 - GERALD CALLS ME
Gerald violated no-contact instructions indirectly by calling from an unknown number.
I answered before checking.
“Rachel.”
I almost hung up.
“Don’t.”
His voice sounded older.
“Patricia has gone too far.”
I laughed.
“You sat at the table.”
“I didn’t know what she was going to do.”
“You were eating.”
Silence.
“I thought the meat was beef at first.”
“Then?”
“She told you.”
“I was shocked.”
“You told Emily to take a bite.”
“I was trying to keep Patricia calm.”
That sentence.
Family peace.
Always financed by the person being harmed.
“You helped her.”
“I know.”
He started crying.
I did not comfort him.
Then:
“She’s been trying to get custody.”
“I know.”
He went quiet.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Then you know about the assessment?”
“What assessment?”
Another silence.
