Chapter 25 - LILA’S WORK

Lila did not join Mercer Hospitality.

Thank God.

She studied child development and later became an occupational therapist.

People assumed because of her childhood.

She hated that.

“I like pediatric rehab.”

Fair.

Trauma does not own careers.

At twenty-five she asked to see the birthday video.

We arranged access to archived evidence.

She watched once.

Grandma’s shove.

Her own fall.

My entrance.

Her saying:

Mommy never got the money.

My slap.

Arthur’s envelope.

My line.

Then she stopped.

“That’s enough.”

She did not replay.

Did not make documentary.

Did not post.

The video remained legal history.

Not content.

She asked me:

“Why did you hit her so hard?”

“I was angry.”

“You knew I was safe?”

“Yes.”

“So wrong.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then:

“You looked cool.”

“Elena will kill you.”

Lila laughed.

Humor.

Safe now.

She later volunteered with a family-support program teaching children that food should not be used as punishment.

Not because she became crusader.
