Chapter 22 - ESTELLE COMES HOME

My mother completed custody and supervised release.

She was seventy-two.

Older.

Still elegant.

No family office.

No board role.

No Mercer House.

She lived in a condo she owned lawfully.

Financially comfortable after restitution.

Not queen.

Not destitute.

She requested contact with Lila.

Lila was seventeen.

“No.”

Court did not force.

At eighteen:

“Maybe one video call.”

We arranged mediation.

My mother appeared on screen.

For once, no pearls.

Maybe intentional.

Maybe not.

Lila asked:

“Why did you tell Dad Mom abandoned me?”

Estelle closed her eyes.

“Because I wanted him angry at her.”

“Why?”

“So he would stop listening to her about money and the house.”

There.

“Did you think Mom would lose me forever?”

“No.”

“Then why make me think she left?”

My mother cried.

“I thought it would be temporary.”

Lila stared.

“That made it okay?”

“No.”

“Did you make me serve because of Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every time you defended her, I felt like I was losing control of the story.”

That answer was better than apology.

Specific.

Lila asked:

“Do you still think servants eat after family?”

My mother looked horrified.

“No.”

“Did you ever?”

Silence.

Then:

“I believed people lower in the household hierarchy could wait.”

Lila leaned back.

“Hierarchy.”

“Yes.”

“You were weird.”

Estelle laughed once through tears.

“Yes.”

The call lasted twenty-six minutes.

No hug.

No promise.

Lila did not schedule another for three years.

My mother accepted.

That was the first boundary she ever respected without trying to renegotiate.

Late growth.

Still growth.
