Chapter 17 - FOOD

Lila refused birthday cake for two years.

Not all cake.

Birthday cake.

Because she remembered Estelle falling into one after I slapped her.

The human brain is creative.

We did not force exposure.

At seven she attended a friend’s party.

Ate cupcake.

Fine.

At eight she asked to help serve dinner.

I froze.

She noticed.

“Dad.”

“Sorry.”

She carried a bowl of salad.

No apron.

Then asked:

“Can I wear apron? I don’t want sauce on dress.”

My body reacted.

Elena looked at me.

Let her choose.

Lila tied on a green kitchen apron.

Served salad.

Then sat.

Ate first with everyone else.

No ceremony.

That was healing.

Not erasing the apron.

Returning choice.

Then one evening she pushed her own plate away.

“I’m full.”

My mother’s voice appeared in my memory:

Servants eat after family.

I almost said:

Take three more bites.

Stopped.

Ordinary parenting still existed.

“Did you eat enough?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

Not every food boundary was trauma.

But none would be obedience punishment.
