Chapter 16 - MERCER HOUSE

Elena and I sold Mercer House.

Eventually.

Not immediately.

First we debated:

Keep for Lila?

Family history?

Events?

Sell to Mercer Hospitality?

My mother, from custody, sent one message through counsel:

Do not sell your father’s house.

That almost made me sell out of anger.

I waited.

Good.

Independent appraisal.

Open market.

A preservation-minded buyer offered fair value and agreed to maintain exterior heritage restrictions already attached.

We sold.

Proceeds:

70% economic allocation to me.

30% to Elena.

Subject to mortgage and closing adjustments.

No magical equal split because marriage.

Our operating agreement governed LLC economics, while marital lawyers checked broader rights.

Elena used part of proceeds to buy her townhouse.

I bought a house six blocks away.

Lila asked:

“Who owns Grandma house now?”

“A family named Brooks.”

“Can Grandma make them do stuff?”

“No.”

She smiled.

That alone justified the sale.

My mother’s personal history did not create property rights after transfer.

Memory survived.

Control did not.

Crown Harbor opened the same year.

The outside fund invited me.

I went once.

Not opening gala.

Six months later.

Elena came.

We stood in the restored ballroom where my father had proposed to my mother decades earlier.

Elena said:

“This place caused all that?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

I smiled sadly.

“My mother’s fear of losing it helped. The building didn’t forge anything.”

“Good correction.”

Therapy had infected us both.

We had dinner.

Paid ourselves.

May you like

Left.

No curse.
