Chapter 21 - LILA AT SIXTEEN

At sixteen, Lila asked for the full story.

Not every bank exhibit.

Enough.

We sat with her therapist once, then continued at home.

She knew:

Grandma pushed her.

Food was withheld.

Mom was forced out under temporary order.

Grandma forged letter.

Money was moved.

Dad hit Grandma.

What she did not fully understand:

Crown Harbor.

Mercer House ownership.

Emergency order mechanics.

Bank certification.

We explained.

She interrupted constantly.

“So Grandma risked everyone because hotel?”

“Partly.”

“Because Grandpa proposed there?”

“Emotionally, partly.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mom actually want divorce?”

Elena answered.

“I was considering it.”

Lila looked at me.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Would you have come home?”

I took time.

“I hope so.”

“That’s not answer.”

“I don’t know.”

Good.

No retroactive hero.

Then she asked the hardest.

“Why did nobody tell Dad Grandma was making me serve?”

Guests.

Staff.

Arthur.

Relatives.

They had reasons.

None good enough.

I said:

“Because adults often wait for certainty when speaking up will make them uncomfortable.”

Lila frowned.

“So if I see something wrong?”

“Get help early.”

“Even if I’m wrong?”

“Ask questions. Tell someone responsible. You don’t have to investigate.”

She nodded.

No burden to become rescuer.

Then:

“Can I see the video?”

“No.”

She looked at Elena.

Elena said:

“Not yet.”

May you like

At eighteen, she could choose.

For now, memory was enough.
