Chapter 14 - ELENA AND ME

Elena did not move home.

That was the hardest consequence because no judge imposed it.

She rented a townhouse near Lila’s school.

I stayed at Mercer House for three months.

Then realized the house felt like my mother’s argument.

I moved into a smaller rental nearby.

Mercer House remained jointly owned.

Empty except staff and security.

Eventually we leased parts for events? Not yet.

First:

Marriage.

Therapy.

Not reconciliation theater.

Elena asked:

“Why did you trust your mother over me?”

“I didn’t know I was choosing.”

“That is not an answer.”

She was right.

I thought.

“Because Mom’s version let me stay in Singapore and keep believing the family system worked.”

There.

Ugly.

True.

If I believed Elena’s discomfort was manageable, I did not need to come home.

If I believed Mom handled money, I did not need to read.

If I believed calls were merely tense, I did not need to insist on video.

Convenience shaped trust.

Elena cried.

“So I became the difficult one.”

“Yes.”

“Then Lila.”

“Yes.”

I cried too.

Not enough.

Behavior.

I stepped back from international assignments.

Not forever.

For now.

Took a regional operations role.

Lower compensation.

Still good.

No martyrdom.

I began reading every document.

Every page.

Elena mocked me eventually.

Not yet.

Custody?

We remained married legally during the first year.

Lila split time gradually after Elena stabilized and our family therapist recommended.

Not because either parent was unsafe.

Because trauma needed predictability.

Some nights with Elena.

Some with me.

School stable.

No grandparent contact.

We did not use Lila as relationship messenger.

Good.

Then Elena asked:

“Do you want to stay married?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I love you.”

“That’s not enough.”

I knew.

“What else?”

“Because I want to rebuild trust.”

“Still about what you want.”

She was brutal.

Helpful.

I corrected:

“Because if you decide the marriage can become safe again, I want to do the work. If you decide it can’t, I’ll still do the work as Lila’s father.”

That was better.

Elena nodded.

No kiss.

May you like

No dramatic reunion.

Work.
