Chapter 18 - ARTHUR

Arthur retired at sixty-five.

We threw him a dinner.

He refused a banquet hall.

Wanted burgers.

Good.

Lila gave him a card:

Thank you for helping Mommy.

Arthur cried.

Then apologized to her.

“For what?”

“I should have called your father sooner.”

Lila was nine.

She thought.

“Why didn’t you?”

“I was afraid I’d be wrong.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Then next time call.”

Arthur laughed through tears.

“Yes, ma’am.”

No grand hero story.

He preserved evidence.

Drove Elena.

Tried to deliver letters.

Also waited too long.

All true.

I gave him a retirement bonus from my own money, not family office.

No moral laundering.

He had earned decades of service.

He moved to Arizona.

Sent Lila postcards.

Never discussed the case unless she asked.

The sealed forged letter stayed in legal archive until appeals ended.

Then returned to evidence storage according to record rules.

I did not frame it.

Did not keep it in a drawer.

No shrine to deception.

Elena’s real letter from the hotel?

I kept that.

Not because it was evidence.

Because she wrote:

I love you.

Before she knew whether I deserved it.

Eventually I asked if she wanted it back.

“No.”

“Can I keep?”

“Yes.”

Consent even for paper.

May you like

We had become insufferable.

Good.
