Chapter 24 - ESTELLE’S LAST YEARS

My mother lived to eighty-eight.
She never regained family governance.
Never reclaimed Mercer House.
Never controlled Crown Harbor.
She did rebuild limited relationships.
With me:
Coffee twice a year.
No money talk without invitation.
With Elena:
None.
Elena chose no relationship.
My mother respected it eventually.
With Lila:
Letters.
One lunch at age twenty-three.
Another at twenty-seven.
No forced grandmother role.
At the second lunch Lila asked:
“Do you regret Crown Harbor?”
My mother said:
“No.”
Lila looked surprised.
“I regret what I did to keep control of it. I don’t regret loving the place.”
Good answer.
Then:
“Do you regret Grandpa proposing there?”
My mother smiled.
“No.”
Human beings remain more than their worst act.
That did not erase the act.
My mother died after complications from pneumonia.
No mystery.
No last fraud.
Her estate paid remaining obligations first.
Then lawful assets.
She left Lila:
Pearl earrings.
A handwritten note.
Lila kept the pearls.
Did not read the note for six months.
When she did:
I hope you never mistake being obeyed for being loved.
Lila showed me.
“Good line.”
“Yes.”
“She learned late.”
“Yes.”
“Still learned.”
“Yes.”
May you like
She kept the note.
Her choice.
