Chapter 9 - THE DOCUMENT IN DANIEL’S BAG
Daniel refused further interview after Vanessa’s proffer.
His lawyer attacked her credibility.
Affair partner.
Financial debtor.
Cooperator.
All true.
Then police searched his suitcase.
Clothes.
Laptop.
Cash.
Two watches.
And a notarized document.
TEMPORARY BENEFICIARY AUTHORIZATION.
Purported signature:
Emma Carter.
Mine.
Not mine.
It stated I consented to Daniel exercising administrative authority over Sofia’s trust branch during international travel.
I had never seen it.
The notary seal belonged to a retired Virginia notary whose commission expired eight months earlier.
Forgery.
Who prepared?
Metadata:
Carter Family Office.
Created by Daniel’s assistant.
She cooperated immediately.
“Daniel told me Emma had signed a paper copy.”
“Did you see it?”
“No.”
“Who gave you the signature?”
“Daniel.”
A scan from our mortgage documents.
Forgery again.
Why carry it to St. Lucia?
Daniel apparently planned to join Monday’s trust meeting remotely and present the document if North Coast demanded my consent.
Helen said it would not have worked.
North Coast required live verification for extraordinary authority.
Daniel either did not know or hoped pressure would work.
Then the assistant produced emails.
Daniel:
If Emma calls, tell her Sofia is with me and safe.
Assistant:
Where?
Daniel:
Do not say.
Assistant:
Is that legal?
Daniel:
We have joint custody.
Then:
If something goes wrong, Monday still happens.
Something.
What did that mean?
The central truth was close.
The trust’s death clause remained sealed at prosecutors’ request.
But defense lawyers moved to disclose because motive allegations depended on it.
The court scheduled hearing.
I asked Helen privately:
“If Sofia dies, who gets her shares?”
She would not answer fully.
But she said:
“They do not go to Daniel personally.”
Relief.
Then:
“But her death before age seven changes voting control temporarily.”
My stomach dropped.
“To whom?”
“Family stewardship pool.”
“Who controls that?”
“Margaret and Daniel jointly, with independent trustee.”
Daniel gained something.
Not money outright.
Influence.
Could he have wanted Sofia dead?
I recoiled from the thought.
Evidence did not support deliberate killing yet.
The planned St. Lucia child reservation argued opposite.
They expected her alive.
The death was not plan A.
But once she became critically ill, did Daniel decide delay benefited him?
That was darker.
At 10:58 p.m., after the concierge doctor told them to call 911, Daniel texted his assistant:
If Sofia cannot attend, does Monday authority revert automatically?
Assistant:
I don’t know what you mean.
Daniel:
Check the death provision.
My blood turned cold.
His daughter was alive.
Critical.
And he asked about the death provision.
At 11:07, assistant replied:
If beneficiary dies before seven, voting pool stays under current stewardship until next descendant or ten-year reset.
Daniel:
Under me and Mom?
Assistant:
I think so.
At 11:09:
Daniel:
Do not tell anyone I asked.
That did not prove he caused her death.

Chapter 10 would decide how far that knowledge mattered.
