Margaret stopped defending Daniel before trial.
That surprised everyone.
She testified before the grand jury.
Turned over records.
Resigned from the trust stewardship pool voluntarily.
Why?
“Sofia should not have to depend on me protecting my son from consequences.”
That sentence mattered.
She also admitted failures.
She knew Daniel borrowed heavily.
She approved extensions.
She believed family money should help family.
She did not know about forged authorization.

But she had made governance easy for Daniel.

Rebecca corrected me.

So we pursued.
Medical costs.
Wrongful death claims.
Trust restitution.
Not for vengeance.
Because legal systems quantify harm even when numbers feel insulting.
Margaret asked to pay for funeral expenses.
I refused at first.
Then reconsidered.
Sofia was her granddaughter too.
We split some costs through the estate.
No moral theater.

Grief crossed accountability.

I smelled it.
