Chapter 15 - VANESSA TESTIFIES
Vanessa walked into court wearing gray.
No resort dress.
No sunglasses.
She admitted everything under her plea.
The affair.
Passport.
Plan.
Pressure.
Medicine.
Delay.
Flight.
Daniel’s lawyer attacked.
“You lied to Emma for months.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to police.”
“Yes.”
“You are testifying for a reduced sentence.”
“Yes.”
“You would say anything.”
“No.”
“How can anyone trust you?”
“They shouldn’t trust me without records.”
That was the best answer she gave.
Then records corroborated.
Messages.
Receipts.
Audio.
Flight.
She described Sofia at the lodge.
“She kept saying she wanted her mom.”
I stopped breathing.
The prosecutor asked:
“What did Daniel say?”
“That Emma was making her difficult.”
“Did you believe that?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
“Sofia said, ‘I’m not lying about you.’”
Truth from a six-year-old.
Then asthma.
“What did Sofia ask for?”
“Her purple bag.”
The inhaler.
Back at the lake house.
“Did Daniel know?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She said inhaler.”
“What did he say?”
Vanessa cried.
“He said we weren’t driving forty minutes back.”
That detail had not been public.
Defense objected.
No recording.
Her credibility mattered.
Then:
“Why not call ambulance then?”
“Because I was scared Daniel would leave me.”
There.
Not mind control.
Dependency.
She chose him.
Over my daughter.
The defense asked:
“Did Daniel ever tell you he wanted Sofia dead?”
“No.”
“Did he intentionally cause asthma?”
“No.”
“Did he refuse all medical care?”
“No. We bought medicine and drove to clinic.”
“Then this was a terrible mistake.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.”
The courtroom quieted.
