Chapter 17 - SENTENCING DANIEL AND VANESSA

Vanessa was sentenced first.

Her cooperation reduced the term.

Her conduct still demanded custody.

The judge considered:

No prior record.

Substantial cooperation.

Direct participation in removal and delay.

Failure to seek help independently.

Obstruction.

She received a significant custodial sentence followed by supervision.

Her travel company collapsed during proceedings.

Not judicial punishment.

Business consequence.

She retained lawful personal assets.

No public starvation.

No symbolic ruin.

Her statement to me:

“I chose him over Sofia.”

No excuses.

Then:

“I will regret that longer than any sentence.”

Maybe.

I did not respond.

Daniel’s sentencing was longer.

Manslaughter.

Fraud.

Custody interference.

Obstruction.

Judge emphasized:

“This court does not sentence you for adultery. It sentences you for decisions proven in this case.”

Good.

People confuse moral disgust with criminal counts.

My victim statement:

“Sofia knew what to do during asthma attacks. She was six and better prepared than the adults controlling her.”

Then:

“She asked for her bag.”

My voice broke.

“That is the sentence I hear every night.”

Daniel cried.

The judge imposed substantial incarceration, restitution, supervised release, and permanent fiduciary disqualification from Sofia-related Carter trusts.

Parental consequences were irrelevant now.

There was no child left to parent.

That sentence was the cruelest without anyone saying it.

Margaret’s control of Carter Family Holdings ended voluntarily.

Independent board restructured.

Daniel’s insider loans called.

Some properties sold.

He lost substantial wealth.

Not because the judge wanted poetic justice.

Because debt becomes real when influence disappears.
