Chapter 24 - VANESSA COMES HOME

Vanessa completed custody in her fifties.

I was older too.

She requested no contact for the first year.

Good.

Then one mediated meeting.

I agreed once.

She walked in without sunglasses.

Hair gray at temples.

Hands shaking.

“Emma.”

“Vanessa.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She cried.

“I loved her.”

I looked at her.

“That sentence doesn’t help.”

“I know.”

“Why say it?”

“Because it’s true and because it makes what I did worse.”

That answer surprised me.

She did not ask forgiveness.

I asked one question.

“When did you know she might die?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“When Dr. Reed said call 911.”

Not later.

There.

I had needed the answer from her mouth.

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I had built my whole life around Daniel by then. Calling would mean admitting everything.”

I stood.

“Thank you.”

That was all.

No hug.

No sister restoration.

I never saw her privately again.

We exchanged one letter when Margaret died.

Relationship ended honestly.
