Chapter 19 - MARGARET AND ME

Margaret asked to visit Sofia’s grave with me.

I said no three times.

Then yes.

We stood beside the stone.

SOFIA ROSE CARTER.

2019–2026.

Beloved daughter.

No granddaughter line.

Margaret did not complain.

She placed daisies.

Sofia hated roses despite her middle name.

Loved daisies.

“You knew?”

Margaret smiled through tears.

“She told me roses were too fancy.”

We stood.

Then she said:

“I keep wondering whether I made Daniel.”

I looked at her.

“You raised him.”

“Yes.”

“You also raised him to adulthood.”

“Yes.”

“His choices are his.”

She nodded.

“I covered for him when he was young.”

“What kind?”

“Money. Driving tickets. Bad investments. Lies.”

That mattered.

Not because she caused manslaughter.

Because a long life without consequence can train entitlement.

“I thought protecting him kept the family strong.”

“And?”

“It taught him consequences were negotiable.”

There.

She later wrote that in a governance statement.

No self-flagellation.

Institutional lesson.

Margaret remained in my life occasionally.

Not mother.

Not enemy.

May you like

Sofia’s grandmother.

That role survived Daniel.
