Chapter 8 - THE THING I DID WRONG FIRST

I wanted Brielle arrested before detectives finished interviewing witnesses.

That was not my decision.

I called the district attorney personally.

Bad.

He took my call because of who I was.

Worse.

I said:

“I want both of them charged with attempted murder.”

The prosecutor answered:

“You want to let my office review evidence.”

“No. I saw it.”

“Mr. Greco.”

“She released a six-week-old over fire.”

“Yes.”

“And Brielle blocked Tessa.”

“Yes.”

“Then review faster.”

Silence.

Then:

“Do not call me again about charging decisions.”

Correct.

My lawyer, Caroline Vega, found out.

“You contacted him?”

“Yes.”

“You cannot turn your access into a charging memo.”

“She almost burned June.”

“I know.”

“She should be in prison.”

“Maybe she will be. That is not your role.”

I hated every word.

Then Caroline asked:

“What exactly did Brielle do at the fire pit?”

“Blocked Tessa.”

“Did she hold June?”

“No.”

“Release June?”

“No.”

“Tell Eudora to release her?”

“No evidence yet.”

“Then attempted murder for Brielle is not automatically the same case.”

I knew that.

Anger wanted symmetry.

Law did not.

I called the prosecutor’s office once more.

Not to pressure.

May you like

To apologize for the first call.

Then stopped.
