Chapter 15 - EUDORA SAYS SHE KNEW I WOULD CATCH JUNE
Her first formal defense shocked everyone.
“I knew Alphonse was there.”
The detective asked:
“What does that mean?”
“I knew he would catch the baby.”
“Did you tell him you were about to release her?”
“No.”
“Did you know where he was standing?”
“Yes.”
“How far?”
“Several feet.”
“Did you know he could reach you in time?”
“I believed he could.”
“Why release June at all?”
Eudora’s lawyer interrupted.
Good.
Because the answer could worsen everything.
Later, through counsel, the theory became:
Eudora never intended June to contact the fire.
She intended to frighten Tessa into stopping her “hysterical accusation.”
She believed I was close enough to intercept.
That was not a defense I admired.
If true, she intentionally used an infant as a prop in a terror display.
If false, worse.
The prosecutor did not need to prove she wanted the baby burned to prove severe endangerment.
That distinction mattered.
Attempted murder required intent beyond what the video alone necessarily showed.
Aggravated child endangerment and assault-related theories fit more cleanly.
