Chapter 17 - TESSA’S MISTAKE
Tessa made a serious mistake of her own during the investigation.
She received a shared-cloud notification from an old Marlow family photo account.
The account still contained Brielle’s uploads.
Tessa opened it.
Fine.
She still had authorized access.
Then she saw a folder called:
JUNE HOME.
She downloaded everything.
Still probably within account access.
Then she noticed deleted-item recovery.
She restored twelve files Brielle had deleted.
That altered metadata.
One file was a scanned legal memo.
Another contained private journal pages.
Tessa immediately called her lawyer.
The lawyer said:
“Stop.”
She did.
Disclosed the recovery.
Police later obtained independent server records directly.
Some restored files were excluded from the family’s private evidence set until provenance could be verified.
Defense used the mistake.
“Tessa went hunting.”
She admitted it.
“I was afraid they were deleting evidence.”
“Were you authorized to restore Brielle’s private deleted files?”

Credibility survives mistakes better when people stop pretending mistakes are impossible.
