Chapter 23 - LISA AND I

Lisa asked to meet after entering her plea.
Therapist present.
No children.
She looked different without makeup.
“I’m sorry I hit Owen.”
I waited.
“I was angry about the vase.”
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No.”
“I’m sorry I called your family trash.”
“You didn’t. Grant did.”
She swallowed.
“I thought it.”
Good.
Accuracy.
Then:
“I hated that you always looked like you had everything handled.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s why you forged my signature?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“That’s why it became easy to tell myself you could absorb it.”
There.
“I thought if Grant recovered, we’d put everything back.”
“You gambled with Owen’s branch.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“Yes.”
“After I said no.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because your no meant my life changed.”
I stared.
“That is what no means sometimes.”
May you like
She cried.
For once, I did not soften it.
