Chapter 17 - CHARLES CONFESSES

Dad called everyone together.
Not at the house.
Law office.
Lisa refused initially.
Her attorney convinced her.
Charles read a statement.
“I approved transfers without directly verifying Rachel’s consent.”
Lisa stared.
Dad continued.
“I allowed my desire to keep Grant’s business alive and Lisa financially stable to override my obligations.”
Grant scoffed.
“Don’t make this noble.”
Dad looked at him.
“It wasn’t.”
Good.
Then:
“I placed the recorder because I suspected fraud but delayed confronting it because I was ashamed of prior approvals.”
Lisa:
“You recorded us illegally.”
Martin:
“That issue will be litigated separately.”
Dad:
“I should have called Rachel the first day.”
Yes.
Then he looked at me.
“I also should have stopped dinner when Lisa hit Owen.”
My jaw tightened.
“I froze.”
“Why?”
“I saw everything I had failed to control collapse at once.”
“Dad, Owen was six.”
“I know.”

No excuse.
Just failure.
