Chapter 18 - THE THIRD FILE

File 88.

Four days before dinner.

Lisa.

Grant.

Helen.

All three.

Helen:

“Rachel’s coming Sunday.”

Lisa:

“So?”

Helen:

“Dad wants her to sign something.”

Grant:

“Not happening.”

Helen:

“Then tell him the truth.”

Silence.

Lisa:

“He’ll shut everything down.”

Helen:

“He already knows enough.”

Grant:

“Not about the ratification.”

My stomach tightened.

Lisa:

“We need one more month.”

Helen:

“Owen’s birthday is six weeks.”

Grant:

“Exactly.”

Then a sentence that changed the case.

Lisa:

“If Rachel thinks the trust is being drained for Owen’s benefit, she’ll pay attention. If she thinks it’s just family money, she won’t.”

Grant:

“She doesn’t even know the kid’s allocation.”

Lisa:

“Keep it that way.”

Helen:

“This is disgusting.”

Lisa:

“Then don’t take our calls when the restaurants close and eighty people lose jobs.”

Silence.

Helen stayed.

Did not report.

The moral trap was fully visible.

Save jobs.

Protect family.
