Mom called Martin.

Asked for a proffer meeting.
She wanted to explain.

Helen looked older.
“I knew Lisa was using an old signature.”
My whole body went still.
“When?”
“Last year.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I told her to stop.”
“Did she?”
“I thought so.”
“Mom.”
Helen cried.
“She said Rachel always helps.”
There it was.
Again.
“You knew it was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Why protect her?”
“She was drowning.”
“Then let her drown financially.”
“She has children.”
“So do I.”
“You were fine.”
I laughed.
That sentence.
The entire Hawthorne religion.
Rachel is fine.
Therefore Rachel can lose.
“I was protecting Owen’s mother.”
“What?”
“By keeping you out of drama.”
“Mom, I was already in it. You just kept me uninformed.”
