Chapter 12 - THE SECOND RECORDING

File 71.

Dining room.

Lisa and Grant alone.

Grant:

“Charles is getting suspicious.”

Lisa:

“He always gets suspicious when numbers get large.”

Grant:

“He asked whether Rachel knows.”

Lisa:

“What did you say?”

“I said yes.”

Pause.

Lisa:

“Good.”

Grant:

“What if he calls her?”

Lisa laughs.

“He won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Dad hates admitting he doesn’t control things.”

I stopped playback.

Dad closed his eyes.

Lisa knew him.

That was why the scheme worked.

Grant continued:

“Owen’s audit is the problem.”

Lisa:

“Then we deal with Rachel before that.”

“How?”

“She already thinks money is beneath her.”

“Not enough.”

“She’ll sign if we make it about family.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

Pause.

Lisa:

“Then Dad needs to decide whether one spoiled kid gets to sink everybody.”

Spoiled kid.

My son.

Six years old.

No idea he owned a beneficial interest in anything.

Grant laughed.

“Poor little prince.”

I turned off the recorder.

Charles stood.

“I need air.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“You need to hear it.”

May you like

He sat.

Sometimes accountability is simply remaining in the room.
