Chapter 19 - THE DINNER SHE MISSED

Family Thanksgiving arrived.
Morgause could not attend the same gathering as Eluned under current arrangement.
The family split the day.
Eleanor? There is no grandmother maybe paternal grandmother? We can have Aunt Gwyneth host. Fine.
Morgause had lunch with some relatives.
Eluned and I came later.
Cerys spent morning with Morgause and evening with Owen, then came to see Eluned.
Messy.
Possible.
No one died from having two meals.
Then my aunt said:
“This family used to all sit at one table.”
I answered:
“That table was not automatically safe for everyone.”
She looked hurt.
Maybe too sharp.
Then:
“I miss it too.”
Better.
No moral superiority.
Then Eluned asked why Morgause was not there.
“Because adults are following safety rules.”
“Does Aunt miss us?”
“Probably.”
“Do you?”
I thought.
“Yes.”
That surprised me.
Morgause had been my sister before she became a case file.
She made the best coffee in the family.
She once stayed with Seren and me for three nights when Eluned was born.
She had carried Dad’s body grief longer than anyone.
People are not one act.

Some acts still require distance.
Both true.
