Chapter 12 - MORGAUSE’S DEFENSE

Morgause did not deny the Sunday incident anymore.

She minimized it.

“Eluned ate.”

True.

Eventually.

“Her glasses were safe on the refrigerator.”

Physically safe.

Medically inaccessible.

“Cerys’s boots were muddy and Eluned had helped make the mess.”

Was that true?

Cerys and Eluned had played outside.

Maybe both tracked mud.

Then why only Eluned clean Cerys’s boots?

Morgause answered:

“Because Cerys was practicing piano.”

There.

Hierarchy.

Then:

“I was overwhelmed.”

That I believed.

She had a full-time job.

Divorce.

Cerys.

My child twice weekly.

She felt I relied on her too much.

Also true.

Then:

“I did not know how to tell Quillon I resented it.”

There.

Better.

So she told Eluned through tasks.

Food.

Shoes.

Glasses.

Wrong target.

Then Morgause’s attorney produced my messages.

ME:

Can you grab Eluned again? Client meeting.

ME:

I owe you.

ME:

You’re saving my life.

Again and again.

Did that create burden?

Yes.

Did I formally ask how she was coping?

Rarely.

Did I assume family would say no if they needed to?

Yes.

My failure.

Then:

“Did Quillon offer payment?”

Yes.

“Did Morgause refuse?”

Yes.

Why?

She later said:

“Taking money would have made me feel like hired help.”

But secretly she already felt like hired help.

Pride prevented the adult conversation.

Then she turned the child into repayment.

That was the psychology.

Not excuse.

Explanation.
