Chapter 11 - I READ THE LETTER TO ELUNED

Dr. Corinne said Eluned should not receive three adult pages unfiltered.

So we did not hand her the letter.

We chose a few lines.

I sat beside her.

“Grandpa wrote that you never have to earn dinner.”

She looked at me.

“He knew?”

“Yes.”

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“He wrote that you never have to earn your glasses.”

Her eyes filled.

“Did he tell you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He was going to. He died before we talked.”

Eluned looked down.

Then:

“I thought you knew.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t?”

“No.”

“Would you make me go back if you knew?”

“No.”

Immediate.

She cried.

I held her.

Then I did something important.

I did not say:

Grandpa saved you.

He had not.

He noticed late.

He intended to tell me.

He died.

The adults still failed to connect the information in time.

Instead I said:

“I’m sorry I didn’t ask enough questions about what happened at Aunt Morgause’s house.”

She whispered:

“You were busy.”

“That explains some things. It doesn’t mean I shouldn’t have asked.”

Then:

“Is Grandpa mad at Aunt?”

“He was.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

“Forever?”

“I don’t know.”

She accepted that better than I expected.

Then:

“Can I see Cerys?”

May you like

“Yes.”

That mattered more.
