Chapter 8 - SALVATORE MAKES THE WRONG CALL
My active mistake came six days after the fall.
Costa Maritime and Morelli Logistics were partners in a waterfront redevelopment project.
Legitimate.
Large.
Years of permits.
Hundreds of workers.
A joint credit facility depended on both companies certifying no material undisclosed disputes affecting project control.
Adrian was not the sole Costa signatory.
Victor was.
I was Morelli’s.
After learning about the staircase video, I called the lender’s regional president.
I said:
“The Costa side is compromised. Suspend everything.”
He asked:
“Operationally?”
I answered:
“Criminally.”
Too broad.
Adrian had been arrested for domestic assault-related conduct by then.
Victor had not.
Costa Maritime itself was not under criminal investigation for the assault.
I knew the distinction.
I ignored it.
The lender paused a scheduled draw.
Contractors delayed.
For forty-eight hours, seventy-eight workers were told not to begin a phase of construction.
Victor’s lawyers reacted immediately.
They accused me of using Lucia’s assault to damage a rival company.
They were partly right.
I had told myself:
I cannot send men after Adrian.
I cannot touch Victor.
So I will hit the thing they value.
Business.
That was retaliation wearing a suit.
My general counsel, Miriam Hale, walked into my office with the lender letter.
“Fix it.”
“They threatened my daughter.”
“Adrian assaulted your daughter.”
“Victor helped him.”
“Prove the corporate entity did.”
I stared.
She did not blink.
“You are helping Adrian argue this is a family-power war rather than a domestic violence case.”
That sentence moved me.
I called the lender back.
Clarified:
The criminal matter involved Adrian personally.
No evidence established project misconduct by Costa Maritime.
We requested only that any signature authority requiring Adrian be independently reviewed.
The facility resumed.
I agreed to cover documented delay charges attributable to my unsupported broader representation.
Cost:
$74,000.
Not devastating.
Not symbolic.
Real money.
Real consequence.
Victor used my mistake in every later hearing.
