Chapter 7 - LUCIA’S DELETED MESSAGES
Lucia made her own mistake long before the staircase.
She deleted messages.
Not because Adrian forced her.
Because she was ashamed.
Three months earlier she had texted her college friend Nina:
I think Adrian scares me more than I admit.
Then:
He didn’t hit me. I know how Dad will react if I make this sound worse.
Then later:
Sometimes I wake up after dinner and don’t remember falling asleep.
Nina:
Tell your doctor.
Lucia:
Probably pregnancy.
Then:
Please don’t mention this to Dad.
She deleted the thread after Adrian asked why Nina was “suddenly hostile” toward him.
Nina still had her copies.
But Lucia’s deletions gave Adrian’s defense room to argue she curated history.
Then another deleted thread with me.
Lucia had written:
Can I stay at the Morelli house for a while without you confronting Adrian?
I answered:
What happened?
She:
Nothing physical. I just need distance.
I:
You can always come home.
Then the sentence I wished I could erase:
But I won’t host a separation while you refuse to speak to your husband.
I had meant:
Communicate.
Don’t disappear.
What she heard:
You may come home only if you keep negotiating with Adrian.
She deleted the thread because, she said later:
“I didn’t want anyone to see that I asked.”
My own daughter hid evidence of her escape attempt because she felt embarrassed.
That was not on Adrian.
That part was mine.
When she told me, I did not defend the message.
“I was wrong.”
She looked surprised.
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew you wanted distance.”
“You thought it was a marriage fight.”
“Yes.”
“It was.”
“No. It was also you asking your father for a safe place.”
Silence.
Then:
“I made you explain yourself before I gave you one.”
Lucia cried.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
“I didn’t want the families fighting.”
I looked down.
“Neither did I.”
That was the trap.
