Chapter 2 - THE FALL

Lucia remembered the staircase in pieces.
That concerned Miles until he clarified why.
Not because she had lost consciousness.
Because terror compresses memory.
She remembered standing at the top landing.
Adrian behind her.
His phone propped against a decorative bowl on the console opposite the stairs.
She remembered asking:
“Why are you recording me?”
He said:
“Because later you say things happened differently.”
Then dizziness.
Again.
The same floating sensation she had experienced four times during the previous month.
She grabbed the railing.
Adrian said:
“Look at you.”
Lucia told him to stop filming.
He came closer.
She remembered his hand at her shoulder.
Then momentum.
The first step struck her shin.
Her hip struck another.
She twisted onto her side to protect her belly.
She stopped halfway down.
Not at the bottom.
A housekeeper heard the impact and came running.
By the time she reached Lucia, Adrian was beside her saying:
“Don’t move. You slipped.”
Lucia told the housekeeper:
“He pushed me.”
The housekeeper later confirmed that.
Good.
Contemporaneous statement.
Then Victor arrived.
Too fast.
That mattered.
He lived twenty-five minutes away.
He was at the Costa office downtown.
Yet he reached the house within twelve minutes of the fall.
How?
He had already been nearby.
Adrian had asked him to come before the incident.
Why?
Unknown.
Then ambulance.
Lucia wanted St. Vincent Medical Center.
Adrian insisted on Mercer Private.
Miles worked at Mercer.
Why would Adrian choose a doctor connected to both families if he had something to hide?
That became an important defense argument later.
The answer was not obvious.
Adrian knew Miles personally.
He believed he could control the narrative around someone accustomed to powerful families.
He was wrong.
Miles was private.
Not obedient.
Then the blood.
At the house, paramedics checked glucose and vitals but did not draw blood.
At the emergency room, Miles asked Lucia about medications.
Prenatal vitamin.
Iron.
A prescribed reflux medication.
Nothing sedating.
Then Lucia told him:
“I’ve felt drugged sometimes.”
Adrian interrupted.
“She means tired.”
Lucia:
“No.”
That was when Miles ordered broader testing.
That was when Adrian knocked the tray away.
The sequence mattered.
He was not objecting to all blood as some eccentric family rule.
He reacted after toxicology was discussed.
Still not proof he knew what results would show.
But meaningful.
Then the video.
Police needed a warrant or consent to search beyond what had been exposed on the unlocked display and viewed before seizure.
Adrian refused consent.
His right.
Investigators sought judicial authorization based on:
Lucia’s assault allegation.
The visible video thumbnail.
Salvatore’s brief playback.
The housekeeper statement.
Adrian’s interference with medical testing.
The phone remained sealed while they waited.
No one cloned it in a basement.
No Morelli hacker.
May you like
No private enforcer.
Evidence survived because nobody tried to be clever.
