Chapter 26 - THE VERDICT
The jury convicted Adrian of the principal assault charge related to the staircase.
It also convicted him on charges supported by the covert medication evidence and the scheme to impair and misrepresent Lucia, under the specific statutes the court allowed.
The jury did not convict him of every count prosecutors originally considered.
No attempted murder.
No charge claiming he intended to kill Emilia.
No completed theft of Lucia’s shares.
No successful custody fraud.
Those things had not happened.
The court’s factual findings at sentencing remained precise.
Adrian intentionally pushed his seven-month-pregnant wife while she stood at the top of a staircase.
He had covertly exposed her to a sedating medication without consent on proven occasions.
He recorded her impairment.
He created drafts anticipating use of those recordings in disputes about capacity, family control and parenting.
He attempted to interfere with a medically necessary blood draw after the fall.
Lucia and Emilia survived without permanent physical injury attributable to the fall.
That reduced some sentencing considerations.
The pattern and pregnancy increased others.
Adrian received a substantial prison sentence measured in years, followed by supervision and strict no-contact conditions.
Not life.
Not some cinematic dungeon.
Real incarceration.
Real appeal rights.
His parental status regarding Emilia proceeded through family court separately.
The criminal verdict did not automatically erase biological parentage.
Lucia sought sole legal decision-making and no direct contact while protective conditions and professional evaluations remained.
The family court granted strong interim protections.
Future modification, if ever requested, would require lawful review.
No one promised Adrian access.
No one promised permanent termination in a criminal courtroom.
Victor faced no comparable prison sentence because evidence did not establish he planned the drugging or push.
He did, however, pay a practical price.
Costa Maritime’s board removed Adrian from all roles.
Victor temporarily stepped aside as chairman during governance review because he had allowed family loyalty to distort crisis response.
An independent chair took over.
No Morelli takeover.
No secret transfer.
No revenge acquisition.
Costa Maritime remained Costa Maritime.
My waterfront-project mistake was settled.
I paid the documented costs.
The project resumed under independent oversight.
No business war.
Then my diversion closed.
Anger course completed.
Restitution paid.
No conviction after compliance.
Calvin, the instructor, shook my hand after the last session.
“You learn anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
I thought.
“That sometimes the strongest thing I can do is not move.”
He smiled.
“Annoying, isn’t it?”
Very.
Then Lucia.
Her divorce judgment came later.
Her Morelli shares remained hers.
Adrian did not receive control of them.
Marital property was divided under the prenup and state law.
No dramatic stripping of every dollar.
No reward for being convicted.
No automatic poverty.
The law sorted property separately.
Lucia kept Emilia with her at the Morelli residence initially, then bought a smaller home twenty minutes away.
That surprised me.
“Why leave?”
She looked around my enormous dining room.
“Because I survived one man controlling me. I’m not moving from his house into yours forever.”
That sentence could have hurt.
Instead I smiled.
“Good.”
She frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Dad.”
“I’m proud of you.”
