Chapter 25 - England

We went to England two years later.
My idea?
No.
Ione’s.
She was nine.
“Aunt Eleanor cardigan trip.”
That was her name.
Round-trip tickets.
She checked.
“See?”
“Yes.”
Return date printed.
She smiled.
At Heathrow, she held my hand.
Not terrified.
Alert.
At Bathbridge, Eleanor asked whether Ione wanted to see school.
I froze.
Ione said:
“Yes.”
We toured.
No enrollment.
Just buildings.
Library.
Garden.
Uniform shop.
Ione said:
“It’s nice.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I still don’t want go.”
“Okay.”
That mattered.
A place could be good and still not be the place adults chose for her.
At Eleanor’s house, Ione slept in guest room.
First night she asked:
“Door open?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“If I want home tomorrow?”
“We change ticket.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
She stayed ten days.
Cried leaving Eleanor.
May you like
Good.
England became family, not exile.
