Chapter 10 - The Real Plan

The real plan was not to take Ione on vacation.

It was not even simply to enroll her in a school without asking me.

Marjorie planned to create a new reality and make reversing it emotionally expensive.

She had started six weeks earlier.

Step one:

Convince herself Ione was “dependent.”

She wrote examples:

Cries when Fletcher travels.

Wants bedtime call.

Asks for help with chores.

Keeps Claire’s scarf under pillow.

Every one normal enough.

She interpreted grief and attachment as weakness.

Step two:

Rebuild discipline.

More chores.

Longer chores.

No comforting during tears.

Sleep by laundry room after major refusal.

Not because the hallway itself mattered.

Because she wanted Ione to learn:

Your bedroom is conditional.

Your father is not available every time you want him.

You can sleep elsewhere.

Step three:

Use my legitimate caregiver authorization as foundation.

She copied my signature.

Deleted travel restrictions.

Created broader authority.

Step four:

Contact Eleanor.

Tell her I approved.

Step five:

Secure Bathbridge school place.

Tell school I was a widowed father overwhelmed by work and that grandmother had temporary educational authority.

Step six:

Book flights.

Marjorie round trip after three days.

Ione one way.

Why would Marjorie return without child?

Because Eleanor would keep her.

With what authority?

The altered documents.

Would that survive serious scrutiny?

Probably not.

But enough to get through initial days.

Step seven:

Tell me after departure.

Her draft email, scheduled but never sent, was recovered from her laptop under warrant/discovery later.

Fletcher,

I know you will feel betrayed.

By the time you read this, Ione will be with Eleanor and enrolled for the term.

Please do not punish her by ripping her out immediately because you are angry with me.

There.

Use child against reversal.

Then:

Give it thirty days.

If she is miserable after thirty days, we will revisit.

We.

As though she co-parented.

Then the sentence that confirmed everything:

Once school starts and she has a routine, you won’t bring her back just to prove you can.

The goal was not legal custody.

Not kidnapping for ransom.

Not permanent disappearance.

Marjorie believed she could force me into accepting a four-month separation by getting ahead of my consent.

Then, perhaps, longer.

A note:

If term successful, discuss spring.

There.

Potential continuation.

No final date.

Then why tonight?

Because I was scheduled to fly to Chicago the next morning for a two-day client meeting.

She expected me distracted.

She expected Vaughn passive.

She expected Ione to believe I approved.

Everyone had a role in her model.

Except nobody was allowed to choose.

That was the central secret.

The red hands.

The pillow.

The packed room.

The passport.

The forged consent.

The school.

The one-way ticket.

They were not separate cruel decisions.

They were preparation.

My mother had spent weeks teaching my daughter that belonging could be withdrawn, so when the real removal came, Ione might believe it was simply another adult rule she had failed to satisfy.

Rebecca looked at me across the conference table.

“This is serious.”

“Will she go to prison?”

“Don’t jump.”

Right.

Criminal charges would depend on jurisdiction.

Forgery.

Attempted custodial interference.

Child maltreatment.

False documents.

No completed international removal.

No physical serious injury.

Law would stay narrow.

Then she said:

“Your mother believed you would accept once the situation was established.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I thought of my whole life.

Because I often had.

Different decisions.

College holiday plans.

Company dinners.

Moving my father’s retirement account.

Family vacations.

Marjorie acted.

People adapted.

I said:

“Because she thinks compliance after the fact is consent.”

Rebecca nodded.

May you like

That was the center.

And I had spent forty years teaching her that sometimes, with me, it worked.
