Chapter 24 - The First Letter

Marjorie wrote Ione from custody.
Dr. Anita reviewed.
First paragraph:
I am sorry things became so frightening.
Too passive.
Not delivered.
Second draft later:
Ione,
I made you scrub floors as punishment.
I made you sleep beside the laundry room.
I told you your dad needed space from you.
Those things were wrong.
Good.
Then:
Your dad did not ask me to send you to England.
Good.
I changed papers so it looked like he had.
Very good.
Then:
Aunt Eleanor did not know I was lying.
Good.
Then:
You were never being sent away because you were bad.
Excellent.
Ione listened.
Asked:
“Grandma wanted?”
“Yes.”
“Dad no?”
“No.”
“Grandpa no?”
“He did not know.”
Then:
“Can I be mad?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“I am.”
May you like
Good.
No forgiveness assignment.
