Chapter 15 - Eleanor Comes to America

Eleanor flew over.
Not for trial.
For Ione.
She apologized.
“I believed Grandma.”
Ione asked:
“Did you want me?”
Eleanor’s face softened.
“Yes. I would love having you visit.”
“Forever?”
“No.”
“School?”
“Only if your dad said and you wanted it.”
“Grandma said Dad said.”
“I know.”
Then:
“Did you buy uniform?”
Eleanor looked embarrassed.
“One cardigan.”
Ione laughed.
“Can I see?”
She had brought it.
Navy.
Too large.
Ione tried.
Sleeves covered hands.
We all laughed.
That mattered.
England became a place again.
Not exile.
Eleanor invited us for a future family trip.
I said:
“Someday.”
Ione said:
“With Dad.”
“Yes.”
“And airplane back?”
“Yes.”
Round trip became safety language.
Then she asked:
“Can I keep cardigan?”
Eleanor said yes.
