Chapter 6 - RICHARD HALE’S NAME

Ethan had always hated my surname.

Not openly.

He joked.

“Hale sounds like a law firm.”

He encouraged me to use Blackwood socially.

I did.

Not because he forced.

Because I was married.

At charity events:

Ava Blackwood.

Invitations.

Place cards.

Press.

My mother’s surname disappeared gradually.

Now I wondered whether that had helped anyone forget.

Richard Hale had not.

The media learned he was my father after police records became public.

Headlines became grotesque.

BLACKWOOD HEIR STRIKES BILLIONAIRE’S HIDDEN DAUGHTER.

HIDDEN HEIRESS.

SECRET HALE DAUGHTER.

None accurate.

I was not hidden.

My birth was public if anyone searched.

I simply lived privately.

Richard issued one statement through counsel:

“My daughter’s identity and pregnancy are not corporate assets. I will not discuss her private life.”

Good.

Then reporters asked why he arrived with five bodyguards.

Because he had been coming from an airport security detail after a high-profile board meeting.

They were his executive protection team.

Not enforcers.

No criminal kingpin.

Authority can look cinematic without crime.

I was relieved by boring truth again.

Richard’s companies had no ownership in the Blackwood transaction.

But he had one relevant role.

When Mom died, she named him emergency notice recipient if trustees believed coercion involved me.

Not decision-maker.

Notice.

Julian Cross saw possible coercion.

Called him.

That was why Richard came.

He had not been monitoring me.

He did not know Ethan had hit me until the door opened.

That mattered.

My father had not orchestrated a rescue.

He arrived because paperwork triggered a safeguard.

Then acted impulsively when he saw me.

Even wealthy families benefit from boring procedures.

The trust audit found more.

Vivian had contacted Samuel’s junior administrator nine months earlier asking whether marital household representation could “simplify” my inactive beneficiary status.

The administrator declined.

She went around them.

Outside counsel drafted the gala consent.

It was not illegal to propose.

It became concerning because nobody gave me full disclosure.

Richard asked:

“Did Ethan ever discuss governance?”

“No.”

“Did Vivian?”

“No.”

“Then they planned to put it in front of you at a gala?”

“Yes.”

He looked furious.

I said:

“Do not do anything.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were thinking.”

“I’m allowed.”

“Privately.”

He almost smiled.

Our relationship was becoming recognizable again.

Before power ruined everything.

Then Naomi found a text between Vivian and Ethan.

V: She’ll sign if you keep her calm.

E: She’s suspicious.

V: Then remind her what divorce looks like for women with no family.

My entire body went cold.

Ethan:

That’s cruel even for you.

Vivian:

And effective.

No reply.

He had not endorsed it.

He had used the exact concept later.

Where will you go?

You don’t have parents.

Cruel ideas spread through families until nobody remembers who authored them.

Then another text, three days before the slap:

E: She asked why the gala lawyers need her signature.

V: Tell her foundation restructuring.

E: That’s not accurate.

May you like

V: Close enough.

Ethan knew enough to know he was lying.
