Chapter 11 - VIVIAN WITHOUT THE WINEGLASS
Vivian requested a meeting.
I refused.
She requested again through counsel.
I accepted one recorded deposition instead.
No private family conversation.
She arrived in navy.
No diamonds except her wedding band.
No wineglass.
Naomi asked:
“Did you know Ava was Richard Hale’s daughter before Ethan married her?”
“Yes.”
“Did Ethan?”
“Not initially.”
“When did you tell him?”
“Before the wedding.”
My chest tightened.
That contradicted Ethan.
“How long before?”
“Approximately two weeks.”
“What exactly?”
“That Richard Hale was her estranged father.”
“Did Ethan ask why she had not disclosed?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“That she was ashamed of the relationship.”
I almost stood.
I had never been ashamed of Richard.
I had been angry.
There is a difference.
“Did you investigate the Evelyn Hale Heritage Trust?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Ava was marrying into my family.”
“Did you tell Ava?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She rejected that side of her life.”
True observation.
Wrong conclusion.
“Did you know her pregnancy changed protector rights?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Vivian folded her hands.
“She had never shown interest in governance.”
Naomi leaned forward.
“Did interest matter to whether she had a right to know?”
Vivian did not answer.
Then the hardest question.
“Why did you repeatedly characterize Ava as parentless?”
Vivian looked toward me.
“To make a point.”
“What point?”
“That marriage was the family she chose.”
No.
Naomi waited.
Vivian exhaled.
“And because if she remembered she could call Richard Hale whenever she was unhappy, Ethan would never build a stable marriage.”
There.
Isolation as marital strategy.
“Did you instruct Ethan to hit her?”
“No.”
“Did you expect violence?”
“No.”
“Did you encourage him to prevent her leaving?”
“I encouraged him to resolve the conflict.”
“Did you tell him, ‘Don’t let her create public spectacle’?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him to use the fact she believed she had nowhere to go?”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
No crime automatically.
Morally clear.
Then:
“Were you aware Richard Hale and Ava were estranged by Ava’s choice?”
“Yes.”
“So her lack of contact was not proof she lacked support.”
“No.”
“Yet you taught your son to use estrangement as leverage.”
Vivian looked down.

“Yes.”
That one word mattered more than the diamonds she lost later.
