Chapter 20 - VIVIAN AS GRANDMOTHER

Vivian requested access to Rose.
I said no for two years.
She challenged nothing legally.
She had no automatic grandparent right in our circumstances sufficient to override parental decisions.
At least not easily.
She waited.
Then sent one letter.
Ava,
I spent years telling myself that because you rejected your father, you needed the Blackwoods more than you admitted.
That was my excuse for making dependence useful.
She admitted the gala strategy.
The class insults.
The orphan comments.
Then:
I did not tell Ethan to hit you. I did teach him that keeping you uncertain made the marriage safer. That belief helped make what happened possible.
Good.
No request for forgiveness.
At three, Rose asked:
“Daddy has mommy?”
“What?”
“His mommy.”
“Grandma Vivian.”
“Why I don’t see?”
Age-appropriate truth.
“She treated me badly and we haven’t decided if seeing her is safe and healthy.”
Rose accepted.
At five, I allowed one supervised meeting.
Vivian brought no diamonds.
No enormous gift.
A book.
Rose ignored it and asked for crackers.
Vivian laughed.
The meeting went fine.
