Rebuilding with my father took longer than dismantling my marriage.
Richard apologized for the years before Mom died.

“I treated your safety as my jurisdiction.”
“Yes.”
“I had security people track your location in college.”
“I know.”
“You did?”
“I found out.”
He looked embarrassed.

“Did Mom know?”
“Yes.”
“Did she approve?”
“Sometimes.”
That complicated her sainthood.

“You both were controlling.”
“Yes.”
“Then she wrote a trust about not controlling me.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Your mother was excellent at identifying flaws after practicing them.”
That sounded like love.
We began monthly dinners.
No business unless I raised it.
He failed twice.
I left twice.
Third month, he learned.
Rose called him Grandpa Rich at two.
He hated “Rich.”
