Chapter 5 - MISS BUTTON’S FIRST FILE

The camera exterior was cleared for digital handling.

A forensic technician created a copy before opening any files.

The original stayed sealed.

Detective Ellis allowed Maya and me to view only footage relevant to our own home after investigators screened it.

The first recovered clip was from twelve days earlier.

Lily sat on her bed.

Evelyn entered carrying a plate.

“Dinner.”

Lily looked down.

“Mommy said I can have spaghetti.”

“Your mother has no discipline.”

“This is carrots.”

“Then eat carrots.”

“I don’t like them.”

Evelyn took the plate away.

“No food until breakfast.”

Lily began crying.

The clip ended because the camera’s motion sensor stopped recording after Evelyn left.

Michael watched in silence.

The next clip:

Evelyn entering the laundry room.

Lily already inside.

Door closing.

Twenty-six minutes later, opening again.

“Are you ready to stop screaming?”

Lily nodded.

Michael left the viewing room.

He vomited in the hall.

I followed.

He looked at me.

“You knew some of this.”

“I knew enough to be scared.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“I thought you would tell her about the camera.”

“I would have removed her from our house.”

“You kept defending her.”

He flinched.

Because that was true too.

We had both failed differently.

His loyalty.

My secrecy.

Neither caused Evelyn’s choices.

Both delayed us.

The third clip contained no abuse.

Evelyn searching Lily’s room.

Opening drawers.

Checking beneath the mattress.

Then approaching Miss Button.

The camera angle shifted violently.

The file corrupted.

That was the moment Evelyn likely discovered the loose seam.

The final readable frame showed her face close to the doll.

Not surprised.

Interested.

The next six hours of footage were damaged.

Not deleted cleanly.

Physically corrupted.

Maybe from moisture.

Maybe from chemical exposure.

Maybe deliberate tampering.

The most important period remained inaccessible.

Detective Ellis refused to speculate.

At Ward Fresh, an emergency board meeting removed Evelyn from operational access pending investigation.

She remained a shareholder.

Her voting rights could not simply vanish because she was accused of abuse.

Michael took temporary leave.

An independent director, Grace Nolan, became acting CEO.

She immediately suspended the warehouse transaction.

Evelyn’s allies protested.

Grace answered:

“No seventy-five-percent transaction closes while one seventeen-percent block is under a coercion investigation.”

The deal would wait.

That evening, Michael received a call from his mother’s criminal attorney.

Evelyn wanted to speak privately.

He refused.

Then changed his mind only after counsel arranged a recorded call.

Evelyn said:

“Your wife is manipulating you.”

Michael answered:

“She and Lily were on the floor.”

“Because Clara is unstable.”

“You locked the pantry.”

“To control waste.”

“Lily is four.”

“She needs structure.”

“Did you put something on the doll?”

Silence.

Then:

“You should be asking what Clara put in this family.”

“What does that mean?”

“She controls seventeen percent that never should have gone to her.”

“Lily controls it.”

“Lily is four.”

“Exactly.”

Evelyn’s voice sharpened.

“Your father humiliated me in his will.”

There it was.

Not the full secret.

The first honest motive.

Then she said:

“By Monday, that mistake was supposed to be corrected.”
