Chapter 16 - MICHAEL’S MOTHER

Michael did not visit Evelyn for three years.
Then he asked me:
“Would you think I was betraying you if I went?”
“Yes.”
He flinched.
I continued.
“And I would know that feeling is mine, not a rule for you.”
He went.
Not with Lily.
Never without therapy and legal review.
Evelyn sat behind glass.
She looked older.
Michael later told me only what he chose.
“She said she did it because Dad humiliated her.”
“Do you believe that?”
“I believe she felt humiliated.”
“Did she apologize?”
“For poisoning you, yes.”
“And Lily?”
“She said she never meant for Lily to get as sick as she did.”
“That is not an apology.”
“No.”
“Will you go again?”
“I don’t know.”
He did, once more, a year later.
Then stopped.
Not because I ordered it.
Because Evelyn used the second meeting to ask him to challenge forfeiture.
He recognized the pattern.
Love was still being converted into access.
He left.
Years later, Evelyn wrote Lily an apology.
We stored it until Lily was old enough.
At eight, she knew Grandma had made her sick.
Not the corporate details.
At twelve, more.
At fifteen, she read the letter.
Evelyn wrote:
I thought I could make you weak without truly hurting you. That sentence sounds monstrous now because it was.
Lily stopped there.
“Did she want money?”
“Yes.”
“And power?”
“Yes.”
“Was I just in the way?”
I answered carefully.
“She saw you as someone whose rights could block what she wanted.”
Lily looked down at Miss Button sitting on her shelf.
“Did she love me?”
“I think she felt love.”
“Then why wasn’t that enough?”
“Because love without respect can still become dangerous.”
May you like
Lily kept the letter.
No reply.
