Chapter 22 - CLARA AND MICHAEL

Michael and I stayed married.
Not because the crisis made us stronger.
Crises do not perform marriage therapy.
We stayed because years of ordinary behavior changed what the marriage became.
He stopped opening my mail.
I stopped gathering evidence before speaking to him.
We maintained separate passwords.
Shared household accounts had dual alerts.
No relative moved in without both agreeing.
When we fought, we sometimes failed.
Once Michael accused me of sounding like Evelyn when I restricted Lily’s spending in college.
He apologized before I asked.
Once I told him he had inherited his mother’s need for control during an argument about retirement.
Too broad.
I apologized.
The past remained available as a weapon.
We learned not to use it casually.
At our thirtieth anniversary, friends asked whether we would renew vows.
“No.”
May you like
We already had vows.
What mattered was whether Tuesday morning still respected them.
