Chapter 21 - LILY’S FIRST APARTMENT

At twenty-three, Lily moved into her first apartment near veterinary school.
I inspected the pantry.
She caught me.
“Mom.”
“I was looking.”
“At what?”
“Nothing.”
She opened the door.
Food.
No lock.
Then handed me a small brass padlock from a hardware kit.
My body tightened.
She smiled.
“It’s for my bike chain.”
“That’s not funny.”
“A little funny.”
Eventually, yes.
She kept Miss Button on a shelf.
The doll had one replaced sleeve.
No camera.
Lily’s roommate asked why the doll looked old.
“Family drama.”
