Chapter 18 - HENRY’S SEVENTEEN PERCENT

At sixteen, Lily began formal trust education.

The seventeen-percent stake had changed value over years.

Ward Fresh had become leaner, more transparent, and partly employee-owned.

Lily’s trust sold some shares gradually.

The remaining stake was worth substantial money.

She asked:

“Can I sell all of it?”

“Eventually, within trust rules,” the fiduciary said.

“Can Mom stop me?”

“No, once your direct control applies.”

“Dad?”

“No.”

“Grandma Evelyn?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She studied the annual report.

Then asked:

“Did Grandpa Henry leave this because he knew Grandma was dangerous?”

Michael answered:

“He knew she liked control. I don’t know whether he imagined what happened.”

No turning the dead into prophets.

Henry had also spent decades letting Evelyn dominate family decisions.

His trust protection was useful.

It did not erase earlier silence.

Lily chose no role in Ward Fresh.

She wanted veterinary medicine.

Her inherited shares did not become a career assignment.

At eighteen, she worked at an animal shelter.

The first dog kennel she entered made me stop breathing.

Lily noticed.

“Mom.”

“I’m okay.”

“This isn’t that kennel.”

“I know.”

She opened the gate.

A terrified dog stayed in the corner.

Lily sat on the floor outside.

Did not force contact.

Waited.

The dog eventually approached.

I cried in the parking lot afterward.

Healing has no dignity sometimes.
